The historical Basque city of San Sebastian has been the home of nine of the past ten Nixon Surf Challenges. For its ten-year anniversary, the event was brought to a place where no-one would ever guess a surf competition could be held at: the artic waters of the Lofoten Islands, Norway. This year, we strove to pursue 2011’s initiative: create the unseen, derive from the standards and find the uncommon place. From the iceberg of the polar circle to the arid land of La Graciosa: welcome to the 2012 Nixon Surf Challenge.
Home to only 700 inhabitants and small enough to explore on foot, La Graciosa has developed a mythical reputation among surfers: 27 km2, no paved roads, a lunar landscape and yes, some pretty extreme locals who have been going about their business quietly for years, gorging themselves on world-class reef breaks on a day-to-day basis. So if you’re eyeing up on charging the little-known slabs of La Graciosa, take a good humble attitude, show plenty of respect and trust us, you’ll get the rides of a lifetime.
The young surfer David Le Boulch is from the picturesque coast town of Bidart in the French Basque Country. A well known breeding ground for outstanding surfers, this area produces world class surf, so it's not a miracle David learned to shred in pretty much every condition you can find. He has style and a large repertoire of tricks that he is constantly working on; not to mention some serious tube riding skills.

‘Black Shark’? Sounds like a pretty strange nickname for such a shy and discreet looking man. Jonathan grew up in the Canary Islands, also known as the European Hawaii. With such stomping grounds, it’s no surprise you see him killing it once in the water. He’s able to surf everything from 1ft to 15ft with the same insolent elegance. He has style, and we’re stoked to have him in our team, period.

Yep, Marc Lacomare is kinda everywhere nowadays. But that's no surprise and very much deserved for the young Frenchman. Airs, carves, barrels...he has them all dialed in and is now fully committed to his World Tour qualification campaign. We’re truly stoked Marc found some time slots between back-to-back competitions to shred La Graciosa.

A ‘slight’ tendancy to charge pretty much any kind of mental wave has led ‘Sancho’ to become one of the most exposed European surfer on the international scene, earning him the « Billabong XXL Award » for the biggest wave ridden in 2011. On rare occasions you'll see him ride smaller waves indeed, and believe us, he's not too bad at it. But let's be honest, for him it's all about hitting barrels in exotic, freezing or simply terrifying locations.
