Nixon Music Portrait Series: Sylvan Esso

Nixon Music Portrait Series: Sylvan Esso

Far away from their North Carolina home, we got to hang out with indie-pop duo Sylvan Esso on a rare sunny afternoon in San Francisco. The two, Amelia Randall Meath and Nick Sanborn, met in a grilled cheese shop in Wisconsin years ago, finding a connection through their love of simplistically catchy pop, synths, and a good sandwich.

While the two set up their gear, mixed up some cocktails and perused the one-of-a-kind trinkets and oddball antiques inside Mixed Nuts SF, we grabbed our cameras and chatted away like new friends do.

With hits like "Coffee," "Play It Right," and their first single, "Hey Mami," the twosome have been occupying our Blaster's all summer long. And there's no signs of SE slowing down anytime soon—with recent successes, like playing on Jimmy Fallon with Questlove and headlining multiple showcases at SXSW, taking a break is a concept they may have all but forgotten. "We haven't stopped moving for a long time," Amelia told us, laughing all the while looking to Nick as he grinned right back.

Amelia wears The Small Time Teller and Nick wears The Mellor.
