Nixon's The Weird Tofino

The second Nixon The Weird invitational event took place in the chilly waters of Cox Bay in Tofino, British Columbia, Canada. Employees from Coastline, HTO, Sikta, Storm, Longbeach Surfshop, Live to Surf and Surf Sister convened on the shore for this one-day invitational.

Unlike a "normal" contest, The Weird presents teams with an odd array of boards in the quiver to choose from. Shaped by Lorne Acheson from Ark Surfboards, boards in a variety of shapes and sizes including asyms, a mini simmons, and even a finless number. Teams were comprised of 4 to a side and included 2 shop employees and 2 Nixon team riders. Teams then had to draw straws to see what board they would surf.

The mash up of people to boards created a rad combination of fun wave riding heats that didn't disappoint and in the end Longbeach Surfshop came out on top of the podium.

In addition to their bragging rights, the winners also took home a custom Nixon 51-30 with a handmade custom leather band. The leather band is unlike anything Nixon's created before; it was comprised from salmon leather sourced from Vancouver Island and was stitched by Ken Diamond using moccasin twine. Not to be overshadowed, the winning trophy was unique in its own right. Made of yellow cedar, artist Lawrence Scow of Alert Bay hand carved this one-of-a-kind paddle.

A special thanks to all the retailers and team riders who came out and showed their support!
