FACES: NIKI LIVINGSTON FROM LOOKOUT & WONDERLAND
When it comes to unabashed love of all things blue, Niki Livingston is at the top of the heap. As Los Angeles' unrivaled shibori master, she has spent years studying and perfecting the Japanese resistance dyeing technique, which has landed her some really exciting partnerships, from Social Shelter Club to MiH jeans. We grabbed styles from our latest collection, Indigo Fade, and headed due north to Livingston's Chinatown studio to catch her in action—and to ask a few questions, of course.
Ha! I do love all blue hues, but I'm in a bit of an electric yellow place right now.
An unexpected place you love to add a little color?
Diane Pernet's wardrobe, monochromatic of course. She would be divine in deep indigos. I'd also love to see her head to toe in layers of Ryan Roche's dusty pinks.
What's your can't-fail outfit?
A Milena Silvano dress and Dries heels…or my PJs.
Oh, I'm a bit vintage car crazy, but I'd say a powder blue 1968 BMW 3.0 CSi. Design perfection and they are seriously fun to drive.
My imaginary bestie is…
Jean Tinguely, the kinetic artist, learn to create sound sculptures and metamechanics.
The Wiener Secession…
never fails to inspire me.
Iceland. A veritable eye-popping beauty; hot springs-filled heaven..
Favorite real-life destination?
Japan. Seeing friends and family never gets old.
Snacktime! Savory or sweet?
A bit of both, together preferably.
Health nut or guilt-free glutton?
Lifelong health nut.
Primary or pastels?
Indigo blues and dusty pinks.
What makes California special for you?
All of the hidden hot springs and the incredibly diverse ecological communities within our small contiguous region makes for endless new adventures.
My wonderful friends spiriting me away on weekend adventures...
…is how I lead a colorful life.
