Faces: Block Shop Textiles
The sisters Stockman (Lily and Hopie) are the perfect compliment of creativity and business. One half MBA, one half MFA, their right brain/left brain partnership knows no limit as they've grown their start up textile business from a living room in Cambridge, Massachusetts into a California textile powerhouse. Although Block Shop has a brand new downtown Los Angeles HQ and takes cues from a decidedly California color palette and geometry spectrum, there is no way to mention Block Shop without speaking of Bagru, India. Through the marriage of traditional Indian hand block printing with modern California aesthetic, Block Shop Textiles are printed by hand, one at a time, using centuries-old techniques involving hand-carved wood blocks and non-toxic dyes made from things like onion skins, tumeric, and pomegranate rinds, giving each textile its own personality and distinct style.
Committed to making heirloom textiles that have high social benefit and low environmental impact, the end result from the works of Lily and Hopie are beautiful, handcrafted works of art. Get to know more about them and their work at BlockShopTextiles.com.
