Why is the crown on the 9 o'clock side of the Nixon 51-30?
The 51-30 was the first Nixon watch that had the crown on the opposite 9 o'clock side. We did this for a very specific reason. Because the watch is so big, if the crown was on the normal 3 o'clock side of the watch case, the crown would dig into the back of your hand while wearing. In other words, the crown is on the opposite side to prevent wrist bite.
Why is the 51-30 so big?
There are a few reasons why the 51-30 is so large. During development, the Nixon crew reached directly out to a few of the free divers on the Nixon team about what was important to them with a dive watch. Their answer was that the dial and numbers had to be big enough that they could actually read it. Also, to make sure that the watch could withstand extreme use and be water resistant to 300 meters, the case had to be made larger and more robust.
